Volume sales of staple foods saw slow growth in 2022 while values rose due to inflationary pressures. The normalisation of lifestyles in the wake of the pandemic reduced the home cooking trend and lowered demand for products such as shelf stable beans and tomatoes as well as pasta and rice.
In 2022, the Salvadoran staple foods market was affected by global inflationary trends, caused by the war in Ukraine that affected the unit prices of some inputs such as flour and fertilisers. As this market relies heavily on food imports to meet its domestic demand, the upward trend in prices in foreign markets was reflected in increases of local retail prices.
Consumers in El Salvador typically have three meals a day, consisting of breakfast, lunch and dinner. Lunch is usually considered the most important meal but is often only eaten together as a family at weekends due to work and school commitments.
In 2022, 28% of households were considered middle class in El Salvador while 27% were living below the national poverty line. In addition to a large informal economy, significant part-time employment and large numbers of people are paid at less than the minimum wage.
In a market which is being characterised by higher prices in staple foods, Salvadorans continued to demand products such as rice, which is an integral part of the local daily diet. However, even in this product category there was a tendency to look for cheaper alternatives in 2022.
El Salvador is set to register among the highest poverty rates in Latin America over the forecast period. As such, the unit price of staple foods will continue to be one of the most relevant factors in the purchasing decision for a large proportion of the population.
