While volume sales of staple foods grew in Honduras in 2022, value sales saw much higher growth. Supply interruptions of grain from Russia and Ukraine, as well as increases in the cost of raw materials, shipping and energy costs had a particularly negative impact on baked goods, pasta, noodles and breakfast cereals.
2022 was marked by an upward trend in the unit prices of basic foods, influenced by international increases in inputs such as flour. Product categories that rely heavily on imports to supply the local market, such as breakfast cereals, shelf-stable fruit and vegetables, and processed seafood were the worst affected in this regard.
In Honduras, most people eat three meals a day comprised of breakfast, lunch and dinner, with lunch being the most significant and largest daily meal. In the past, the typical traditional Honduran diet was comprised of starches, fresh fruit, and meat, usually in Caribbean-style dishes.
In 2022, the Honduran economy experienced some recovery from the negative effects of tropical storms Eta and Iota and the COVID-19 pandemic. An important driver for greater disbursement among Hondurans is the increase in remittances.
Although there are some rural areas to which access is a little more complex, generally a wide variety of products are available nationwide. However, in some urban areas, there are neighbourhoods that are controlled by maras (gangs) who make the distributors pay a "war tax" in order to distribute their goods to stores.
The majority of staple foods categories are set to register moderate growth in value sales over the forecast period. Baked goods is set to remain among the largest categories in staple foods thanks in part to the popularity of bread and cakes in the country.
