Total hot drinks sales experienced a mild contraction in 2022 due to a decline in other hot drinks, specifically the national drink yerba mate which comprises the majority of industry sales. While sales of coffee grew, growth was slower than that seen in the previous year due to a major hike in global prices caused by lower production volumes and higher freight costs.
Due to the maturity of the yerba mate category, consumption of other hot drinks lost momentum compared to newer products such as fruit/herbal tea and green tea options, as these products have become more affordable. Sales of coffee, however, continued to grow in 2022, thanks to wider availability of products and investments by industry players in the marketing and advertising of coffee.
There is a hot drinking culture in Paraguay, although it is not as prolific as the one for cold drinks, as the summer heat can be intense. Hot drinks tend to be consumed in the morning with breakfast and in the afternoon during meriendas (a second breakfast in the day).
Different socioeconomic groups buy from different outlets depending on what is available in the area in which they live. Moreover, the products they buy are also dependent on what they can afford.
The condition of the roads in Paraguay is variable and dependent on the region. The most developed highways connect Asunción, Encarnacion and Ciudad del Este in the southern half of the country.
Although the Paraguayan economy registered a stable performance in 2022, inflation reached nearly 9%. Despite the rising cost of living, government social measures guaranteed the continuous growth of food and beverages consumption.
