During 2022, the economic crisis continued to put huge pressure on demand for hot drinks in the on-trade, while many consumers have shifted to the cheapest options in the off-trade. While many people regard coffee and tea as essential beverages, demand has still come under immense pressure due to falling purchase power.
The combination of dramatic reductions in disposable income levels, steeply rising inflation and the collapse of the Lebanese economy have all deeply impacted the country’s hot drinks industry. In particular, challenges obtaining foreign currency and the strong declines that have recently been seen in the exchange value of the Lebanese pound have meant that most international brands of hot drinks are now either unavailable or unaffordable for the vast majority of Lebanese consumers.
Coffee consumption remains deeply rooted in Lebanese social traditions. Lebanese, Turkish or Arabic coffee (depending on how each person refers to it) is an important part of socialising among local people and a drink of coffee is always offered at the end of any meal and during any social visit and few local people need much of an excuse to prepare and serve coffee to share with friends and family.
2022 saw the economic and social situation in Lebanon deteriorate further as the collapse of the country’s economy continued to develop. This deteriorating situation led to more civil unrest, while shortages of essential medication and other products were increasingly common.
Lebanon’s economic crisis has exacerbated various deeply rooted infrastructure issues that were already making daily life quite challenging. The state of the country’s electricity supply is a major concern as power cuts that were already common have now evolved into a total blackout that has left the local population completely reliant on backup generators for electricity since the middle of 2021.
The forecast period is expected to see more stability in Lebanon’s hot drinks industry. Although demand is unlikely to suddenly rise significantly within the next five years, we also unlikely to see more of the dramatic volume sales declines that were seen during the review period.
