Despite tobacco being an important source of tax revenue, the government and anti-tobacco groups continue to make efforts to reduce its consumption with the aim to eliminate tobacco from the country by 2040. However, there are still many tobacco users due to the wide availability of low-priced cigarettes, bidis and smokeless tobacco.
In 2022, tobacco is being negatively impacted by global inflation, which is seeing prices of products rise across the industry. Premium products in particular are being negatively impacted as the financial burden means fewer households have the disposable income to afford such products.
In Bangladesh, smoking is regarded as a bad habit and younger consumers of legal-smoking age do not tend to smoke in front of older people. The majority of Bangladeshis are Muslim, and many consider the use of tobacco to be makrooh (a disliked or offensive act) under Islamic law.
In 2022, prices have increased due to the rise in cost of raw materials as a result of global inflation. As a result, demand has declined compared to 2019, primarily driven by the financial constraints faced by middle and lower-income consumers.
While supply and stock problems have not been witnessed so far in 2022, there is a possibility that they may arise in the future, leading to challenges for retailers and manufacturers.
