Cigarettes still dominate the tobacco category in Uzbekistan, with 2022 achieving a more positive trend in retail volume sales compared to the previous year. This was fuelled by organic population growth, with the number of adults of legal smoking age rising.
Alternative tobacco products are gaining popularity in Uzbekistan led by e-vapour products, which is a relative newcomer and has been gradually gaining popularity due to its increased availability in 2022. Closed system single-use witnessed significant growth, capturing cigarette smokers that are shifting towards vaping, as it is generally considered less harmful than smoking cigarettes.
British American Tobacco Uzbekistan (UZBAT) maintained its dominant position in the cigarette category in 2022, although it experienced a small decline in retail volume share. Despite facing challenges from price hikes and the increase in illicit trade, UZBAT launched a new product called Lucky Strike, extending its portfolio of well-known brands like Kent, Pall Mall, and Rothmans.
There were no significant changes to tobacco retail developments in 2022. Independent small grocers remained the leading distribution channel for cigarettes in 2022, in terms of retail volume share.
Sales of cigarettes are expected to gradually decline over the forecast period, due to increasing competition from alternative products and illicit trade, as well as government plans to raise excise duty on cigarettes. The development of pipe tobacco is expected to slow down, as younger consumers who are ready to try something new and exotic switch over to closed system single use devices and heated tobacco products.
